Ryan Blaney: Carrying Team Penske’s Speedway Success into Daytona 500

Ryan Blaney, the driver of the No. 12 Ford at Team Penske, is set to race at the 2023 Daytona 500. Blaney has twice finished runner-up in the Daytona 500 and was fourth in last year’s race. He’s also won a series-high three of the last 13 races at Daytona and Talladega, which can be traced back to his time at Penske, where he listened to Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski break down races at Talladega and Daytona.

Learning from the Best

Blaney’s success at these tracks can be attributed to what he learned from Keselowski and Logano, who each have their unique approaches to speedway racing. While Keselowski is now a driver/owner at RFK Racing, he built a legacy at Team Penske. That organization has won at least one race at Daytona or Talladega each season for the past nine years. No other Cup team can match that in the same time.

Logano continues Keselowski’s legacy, followed by Blaney and Austin Cindric, the reigning Daytona 500 champion. Logano starts third after winning his qualifying race Thursday. Cindric is sixth. Blaney starts seventh. Blaney absorbed the lessons and took in the information from Keselowski and Logano, who are both calculating and aggressive at Daytona and Talladega. But each driver has his own style.

“You can’t model yourself after somebody,” Logano said. “You can maybe look at what they’re doing and try to add the good things to what you are, but the bottom line is I’m not Jeff Gordon. I’m not Tony Stewart. I’m not Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. You just have to kind of figure it out. It’s different for everybody.”

Blaney’s Success at Team Penske

Blaney has done precisely that, first when he was at the Wood Brothers, an affiliate of Team Penske, from 2015-17, and then at Penske after 2018 when he moved over to the No. 12 car. Blaney saw Logano and Keselowski win seven of 16 races at Daytona and Talladega from 2015-18 before he won the fall Talladega race in 2019.

Keselowski says the credit for Team Penske’s success at those tracks goes to many. “I think all of the drivers came together and really brought something to the table, but I think there was a huge cultural transformation that I was a part of, for sure, that went from, ‘Hey, speedway races are just where we go to wreck four cars a year,’ to ‘Hey, let’s go here and try to win the race,'” Keselowski said.

The Importance of Evolving as a Driver

Blaney has gained a valuable insight over the years: the need to constantly evolve as a driver. He emphasized the importance of shaking things up and keeping people guessing to maintain a competitive edge. Blaney stressed the need for unpredictability, as making good moves isn’t enough if your opponents can anticipate them and easily block you. Even when you think you’re performing well, it’s crucial to keep evolving and improving.

Blaney, along with Logano, is among the favorites in this year’s Daytona 500. With his unique style and impressive track record, he is looking to carry Penske’s speedway success into a Daytona 500 win.

Austin Hill Wins Second Straight Xfinity Series Season Opener at Daytona

Austin Hill claimed his second straight Xfinity Series season opener win at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, February 19, 2023. The Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner. 300 race saw Hill lead the field for a race-high 38 laps, only to find himself narrowly ahead of John Hunter Nemechek when NASCAR called a caution for Sam Mayer’s spectacular accident on lap 125. NASCAR reviewed the video of the final lap of overtime and declared Hill the winner of the race, which drew the largest crowd to witness an Xfinity Series race at Daytona since the $400-million renovation of the facility in 2016.

Hill, a consummate superspeedway racer, has now won three races at Daytona, including two in the Xfinity Series and one in the truck series. Hill, although thrilled with his victory, first thought of Mayer who spun on the roof of his Chevrolet on the backstretch at Daytona International Speedway, trailing a shower of sparks, before the infield care center treated and released him.

Rookie Parker Retzlaff finished a career-best fourth, followed by Myatt Snider. Riley Herbst, Joe Graf Jr., Ryan Sieg, Cole Custer, and Justin Haley completed the top 10. Justin Allgaier, who was credited with a third-place finish, had another close call in the race that has eluded him. Allgaier went on to win the second stage, with Mayer close behind him.

Race highlights and lowlights

The race saw Hill win the first stage through Allgaier’s benevolence. Hill blocked Allgaier’s Chevrolet, and Allgaier backed out of the throttle to give Hill room. Allgaier’s Chevrolet spun sideways onto the apron behind the initial wreck after Parker Kligerman turned Sheldon Creed’s Chevrolet while bump-drafting near the entrance to Turn 1 on lap 40.

After a tape job to the left rear of his car, Allgaier returned to the track, started at the rear of the field, and quickly charged back into the lead on lap 54. Allgaier’s Chevy Camaro was absolutely blazing fast, and it seems that his magnanimity brought him some karmic benefit.

Unfortunately, for the veteran driver, speed, maneuverability, and good karma could only carry him so far, and he had to settle for a third-place finish.

Conclusion

The Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2023, provided an exciting race, with Austin Hill claiming his second straight win. The race saw a spectacular accident when Sam Mayer spun on the roof of his Chevrolet on the backstretch, trailing a shower of sparks. Fortunately, Mayer was treated and released from the infield care center. The Xfinity Series will return to action at Auto Club Speedway on February 25, 2023.

NASCAR 2023 Season: Expert Picks and Betting Odds for the Daytona 500

The NASCAR Cup Series 2022 season was full of excitement, and fans are eagerly waiting for the 2023 season to kick off with the highly anticipated Daytona 500. Betting enthusiasts are also gearing up to place their wagers on the five drivers who have the potential to win the race, and here are some top picks and longshot plays for the upcoming event.

Chalk play: Kyle Busch

Busch has never won the Daytona 500 despite his best efforts in the past 20 years. However, he is still one of the top picks due to his driving skills and the fact that he will be driving for a new team, Richard Childress Racing. He almost won the Clash at the Coliseum exhibition race, even though he had to fight his way back from the rear of the field after a spin. Busch is currently priced at +1200 to win the race.

Trending up: Bubba Wallace

Wallace has recorded four top fives at Daytona, including a second-place finish in last year’s 500, proving that he has what it takes to run up front at this track. He should be able to build on his performance from last season with his team, 23XI Racing, which is on the rise. The Toyota teams also tend to perform well at Daytona, making Wallace a strong contender at +1600 to win the race.

Best value: Tyler Reddick

Reddick is now teammates with Wallace in 23XI Racing and is set to have the most successful Daytona 500 of his career. He has won three times last season, and his skill should keep him around at the end of the race. With strong equipment and the desire to make a good first impression with Toyota, Reddick is a steal at +2500.

Mid-pack play: Michael McDowell

McDowell, a former Daytona 500 champion, usually runs in the middle of the pack, but his team, Front Row Motorsports, tends to do more with less at superspeedways. They have won multiple times at Daytona and Talladega, making McDowell a good value play at +3500.

Longshot play: Corey LaJoie

LaJoie’s Spire Motorsports may not have the most powerful team, but they can still hang with the big names at Daytona. LaJoie showed last season that he can lead laps even in less than stellar equipment, making him a longshot play at +10000. Winning the Daytona 500 could be the breakthrough that LaJoie needs to make a significant career leap.
